With Change Comes Clarity

Our philosophy is based on a foundation of health-integrating mind-body-spirit approach to the holistic addiction treatment of substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.
I really feel my Counselor cared and heard me! Incorporating DBT and Health Realization into my treatment plan was just what I needed. I know now I do not have to react to every negative thought or stressful situation that comes my way. Learning coping skills is exactly what I needed to continue with my recovery plan from my addictions. Jennifer See more Testimonials >

Mindfulness Education and Mindfulness Therapy

Mindfulness Therapy and Mindfulness Education (Health Realization) is based on a holistic health model of treatment and focuses on these basic principles:

Women are capable of taking responsibility for the decisions they make. If given the opportunity to identify their own goals, each woman knows what is best.

Women with mental health/substance use disorder issues may re-experience these old behaviors. Providing new coping skills, i.e. new ways of thinking, can minimize the impact of those behavior choices and reduce hospitalization and repeated treatment admissions.

Abstinence is the goal of “traditional” substance abuse disorder treatment programs. At Women Drug Treatment Women's Wellness Center we believe that it is useful to use abstinence as a method of improving the overall level of functioning rather than as the end goal. This allows for “slips” to be viewed as opportunities rather than failure or justification for discharge from the program. It also recognizes appropriate use of psychotropic medication as part of the holistic addiction treatment health plan.

Reframing of the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and working with a model of health rather than a disease model, is essential to address the needs of mental health/substance use disorder. It seems logical to view chemical abuse problems as a thinking problem, which translates into a behavior problem. The woman gains a sense of personal power, rather than dealing with powerlessness. Attendance at AA/NA is still often used as a part of the holistic drug treatment, or holistic alcohol treatment experience as it provides good support systems for recovering people.

Use of confrontation to break down denial and defenses, is not an effective technique because it results in shame and guilt feelings about past behaviors. Recognizing any change in behavior in the present is a hopeful, loving response to changes when they occur. Feedback needs to be given with honesty and respect.

By adhering to a philosophy of recovery that addresses the whole person: integrating mind, body, and spirit, Women Drug Treatment's dedicated team of professionals believes that every woman has innate health and is fully capable of accessing the mental health and wisdom with which they were born. We embrace this innate health in everyone by not focusing on problems/illness because this only keeps people stuck and leads to insecurity. Teaching the women at Women Drug Treatment Women's Wellness Center the skills they need will naturally improve self-esteem and allow them to access their inner wisdom. Teaching about the role of thought and emotions such as despair, hopelessness or disillusionment and how they impact on behavior, is a primary goal in the treatment experience at Women Drug Treatment Women's Wellness Center.
Health is a thought away.

Body

Obtaining and maintaining physical wellness is a vital recovery component. While Women Drug Treatment's psychiatrics address stabilization of mental health issues, our dedicated team of licensed nursing personnel provide health and prevention education.

Women who have abused or have developed a dependency on alcohol or drugs often have increased health concerns and have engaged in high risk behaviors that could jeopardize their continued physical and emotional wellness. Women Drug Treatment nursing personnel provide health education, resource information, and information regarding possible side effects of all new medications ordered.

Women Drug Treatment's nursing staff develops and facilitates our educational curriculum. Videos and accompanying worksheets are used to promote discussion amongst the women. Our curriculum includes nutrition education, education relating to sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention, Tuberculosis and Hepatitis Education, Effects of Alcohol and Drug Use during Pregnancy, Personal Hygiene, Importance of Medication Compliance and Management, and Basic Signs and Symptoms of co-occurring disorders.

Paying special attention to the increased number of women diagnosed with breast cancer, our nursing personnel conduct educational groups, teaching the women self-examination techniques. Women Drug Treatment, a Woman's Wellness Center remains on the cutting edge of providing education, resource information, and referral to women receiving services in our holistic addiction treatment programs.
