Experiences and Consequences Are Different

Although both men and women abuse or become dependent on alcohol or drugs, women are affected differently due to body composition, childcare issues, relationship issues, socioeconomic issues, and the stigma associated with women and drug addiction. Although we have come a long way in our attempts to eliminate the stigma, it remains a fact that women addicted to drugs are viewed differently than men in our society therefore seeking treatment resulting in devastating physical and social consequences. The questions of “How could they”? come up time and again.

Research indicates women absorb, metabolize, and eliminate alcohol and drugs differently than their male counterparts. Consuming equal amounts of substances often results in higher concentrations of substances in the blood. This is sometimes due to weight and body fat content. Women also are known to become dependent on alcohol or drugs more quickly resulting in earlier medical and social consequences. Consequences from continued use may include loss of children, relationships, employment, physical and emotional well-being, and possible incarceration. The physical conditions may include, but are not limited to cirrhosis of the liver, diabetes, edema, pancreatitis, heart problems, and high risk pregnancy. Due to the risky behaviors one engages in while intoxicated or to obtain alcohol or drugs, women often contract sexually transmitted diseases.

Because of the high percentages of women who have experienced some form of trauma, women also tend to exhibit increased self-injurious behaviors as well as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) directly related to their use. Women who have experienced trauma are also more susceptible to self medication with drugs and/or alcohol often leading to relationship issues.
